Travel across the Maldives

The Maldives is a scattering of picturesque atolls in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Everything here contributes to the bliss: kilometers of secluded beaches, upscale hotels and very beautiful nature.
The Maldives, the famous “resident” of the equatorial waters of the Indian Ocean, is rightly considered one of the best exotic destinations. There are 1190 islands (or rather, atolls) and all of them with blue lagoons, sandy beaches and unique vegetation. There is everything for rest: peace and quiet, beautiful nature, rich underwater world. And also here are good hotels and high level of service.
Prices on the Maldives are also quite “on the level”: the rest here can afford mainly travelers whose level of income marketers define as “above average”. Having laid out for the trip a big sum, holidaymakers will be satisfied with the holiday for all 100%: divers, diving three times a day – this is the most non problematic subspecies of tourists: they will still be delighted, diving like ducklings, from morning till night, happy married couples will also like this place. They can choose a hotel with the right atmosphere – there are enough on the islands. And, of course, seekers of a completely relaxed holiday in the entourage of a tropical paradise.
Most Maldivian hotels are 4-5 star, bungalow level. Three stars holets are extremely rare: mostly unpretentious divers who dive in the ocean from morning to evening stop there. Many hotels offer accommodation in “water bungalows” – spacious wooden houses on sticks standing directly on the beach above the water. Among the advantages of such exoticism – the peaceful wave of waves under the floor and swimming “from the bed”, the disadvantages – the same splash in periods of storms (it is not possible to fall asleep) and the position “on a rig” at low tide.
Another accommodation in the Maldives is yachts. The places (including immersion) cost about the same as a room and a good hotel. But there is an opportunity to see a dozen different atolls and not to fry in the sun – at sea still a little cooler.
The cheapest accommodation in Malé is provided by the 3*: from 700 MVR per day for a double room with breakfast. Prices in the 5* start from 3800 MVR a day: for such sum money you can rent a whole bungalow. On Maamigili (Raa Atoll) hotel accommodation without a star costs from 590 MVR per night, 3 * from 770 MVR, 5 * from 10 900 MVR. On Maafush (South Male Atoll) the number in the 3* will cost from 465 MVR, in the only hotel 5* – 16 850 MVR per day.
Maldivian cuisine has borrowed a great deal from Indian and Sri Lankan gastronomy: spicy curry sauces, plenty of spices, usage of fruit, and almost complete neglect of vegetables and herbs. Everything here revolves around two products: fish (especially tuna) and rice, which are served in different variations with all sorts of sauces. Some ways to cook seafood; grilling, oiling or frying, smoking, drying and boiling. Snack options: the same fish, only in the form of toppings for a variety of pies, mugs and a sizeable loaf. Often they are extremely roasted. Any meal is complete with yeast-free “roshi” bread or crunchy “papadu” cakes.
You should also try rice dishes with the addition of fish curry and coconut milk. At the Malé fish market or in all kinds of supermarkets you can buy canned fish (tuna – a favorite among the local public and visitors) and dried fish. Traditional drink – “raa” from palm milk, alcohol is almost never consumed by the local population (mainly due to religious prohibitions).
Almost all fruits in the Maldives, except bananas and coconuts, are imported.
Local gastronomic masterpieces are best served in te-shops – small budget cafes scattered on city streets. Most of them are concentrated in Malé, in the resort islands 1-2 restaurants are open, offering a variety of dishes of Maldives, European and international cuisines. In the capital, breakfast costs 60-95 MVR, lunch – 105-160 MVR, dinner with wine – 500-800 MVR per person (alcohol is served not everywhere), at “resorts” prices are higher. The bill includes state tax and service charge (10%).

The distance from Kiev to Maldives is over 6500 km. It is best to reach the capital of the Maldives from Kiev by plane. Unfortunately, there is no direct flight in this area, a transfer is needed in Moscow, or you can use connecting flights via Dubai, Doha or European cities.
The option of traveling from Kiev to Moscow by train can be immediately ruled out: without that, the long road will increase by another 11-12 hours, plus you have to get to the airport, and saving money will not be very significant.
The transplant will take you more than 12 hours to travel there and about 20 hours back. Departure is from Borispol airport, the plane arrives at Male airport. The most cost-effective flights from Kiev to Maldives are organized by the Turkish Airlines single-stop flight to Istanbul. Ukraine International, together with Etihad Airways EY344, offers two-way flights to Tehran and Abu Dhabi, with a total flight time of 16 hours.
You can travel between the Maldives by sea (by speedboats and traditional “doni” boats) and by air (by seaplanes and aerotaxes).
Flyme is a part of domestic flights. Tickets for the flight from Male to Daravand Island, which is part of Baa Atoll – 2700 MVR, on Maamigili in the composition of Raa Atoll – 2992 MVR. The Maldivian carrier serves more destinations: for example, a flight from the capital to Hanimadu (Tiladummati Atoll) will cost 4500 MVR. Aerotaxis are owned by Transmaldivian, all details are on the website.
Between the islands also run wooden boats “doni” and speed boats, designed for 5-20 passengers. Traveling from Male to Mativer (Alif-Alif Atoll) will cost 1250 MVR, Todd (Ari Atoll) – 750 MVR, and Maafush (Southern Male Atoll) – 550 MVR. The rest of the prices and the schedule – on the carrier website.
The idea of renting a car in the Maldives is, to put it mildly, inappropriate. The highways are equipped only on a few large islands and on the capital’s Male Atoll. There is a well-developed network of taxis, the cars of which will take you to the right place in minutes and for little money. This makes renting a car in the Maldives extremely expensive and unnecessary. It is difficult to even quote the approximate car rental rates in the Maldives, as online car booking resources do not provide such a service.
The car can be called by phone (so cheaper) or caught on the street, the average cost of the trip – 25-35 MVR plus 5-10 MVR for luggage. A bus was recently launched in Male: 18 stops can be reached for 4.70 MVR. On other islands, it is necessary to move on foot or by bicycle: in many hotels they are issued free of charge.
