Information about the United States of America

On October 12, 1492, at two o’clock in the morning, a watchman on Pinto noticed a light ahead. At dawn the ships moored to the island, which Christopher Columbus named San Salvador. There was also the first meeting of the navigator with the natives, whom he absolutely sincerely considered to be the inhabitants of India for the rest of his life. By the way, if in the Russian language they later replaced in the name of the indigenous people of the American continent one letter – not to be confused, then in English there was one and only “Indians” – that for Indians (people from India) and for for Indians (native people of America).

You can travel around the United States all year long. In this country everything is created and works for people. This tourist destination is chosen by tourists of all ages and categories. On average, the flow to the United States annually grows by 20-30%. It is quite easy to get a US tourist visa for a year now, and tours are not as expensive as many people have thought so far. You can always choose the right vacation option for any purse in this country with endless opportunities for travel. Many come to the country to improve their English.

Hotels in USA

American hotels have their own classification, which can only be equated to a “star” system. Yes, Superior Deluxe and Deluxe (D) hotels are roughly equivalent to fives and fours plus, Superior First Class (S) is 4-3* plus, First Class (F): 3* plus – 3* , The Moderate First Class (M) is an analogue of 3*, and the Tourist Class (T) is a one-to-two star institution.

Check-in is after 15:00 and check-out is usually before 12:00, rarely before 11:00. Late check-out or early check-in are often paid as an extra full day. Some hotels make a security deposit at the time of check-in – either by blocking a certain amount on the guest’s credit card or by cash. Upon check-out, the deposit will be returned by card transfer (it may take up to three weeks), cash or check.

Almost all the hotels have spacious rooms with large beds. All Florida hotels and most of Los Angeles and Las Vegas have swimming pools. To use the safe and telephone (calls outside the hotel), you must pay a deposit at the front desk, usually 30-50 USD. At checkout, this amount is deducted net of costs. Many American hotels do not have hair dryers: irons and ironing boards can be booked by telephone (usually free of charge).

US cuisine and restaurants

There are many restaurants, bars and all kinds of drinking and dining establishments in the States, especially in big cities (in New York you can find, probably, any cuisine of the world, from Aleutian to Yakut). The nuance: alcohol, especially strong, is served not everywhere, many establishments are limited to serve wine and beer. But the size of dishes in restaurants is just huge. Fast food usually open early in the morning and work till the late night, and some even around the clock.

The main national dish is clearly considered a barbecue, and in each region – its own (and, of course, the right) recipe for its preparation. Still, the best BBQ is believed to be in the southeastern states. It is customary to use the barbecue in an emphatically simple and democratic atmosphere: made of plastic disposable tableware, with inexpensive white bread. Of specialty American dishes it is also worth noting seafood soup with clam chowder tomatoes and famous marshmallows fried on the fire.

Transfer and travel around the USA

Getting to America

Odessa is the champion! Thanks to Transaero flights, Odessa is the cheapest start to the USA from Ukraine. There are quite a few offers for 250-260 euros per month. You just need to pick a date for a cheap ticket.

In second place – Kyiv. Tickets here are more expensive for 15-20 euros. All other cities differ in price. It makes sense to take a train to Kiev or Odessa and fly from there. Trains are the most attractive option for travel within Ukraine.

You may be surprised, but the cheapest opportunity to fly to the US is through Moscow. Prices from Riga and Vilnius are similar to Moscow prices, but getting there is a bit more expensive. So, in order. Flight from Moscow will cost 160-170 euros. There are so many offers and dates to choose from. You can get to Moscow for 22-25 euros.

Now the Baltic States. If you have a Schengen visa, you can try to fly from Riga or Vilnius.

Travel around the USA

Plane

The most convenient, though expensive way to travel between US cities is air travel. Airports are open across the country providing flights from metropolitan areas and small towns. The major carriers are American Airlines, United Airlines, low coster Jet Blue and Southeastern Airlines. Tickets are sold online and at the ticket offices.

Train

The next most popular type of long-distance transport is trains. They are comfortable here: it is convenient to travel even in cheap seats. For fastidious passengers there are double compartments with separate toilet, for families with children – family cars. The fare depends on the class of the car, the distance and other factors, tickets can be purchased at the ticket offices and on the carrier website. For the trip from New York to Washington you will have to pay from $ 90, from Los Angeles to San Francisco – from $ 60.

For tourists in the US there is a US Rail Pass, which gives you free travel within the country for 15-45 days. It costs 460-900 USD (for children – 230-450 USD), train tickets must be reserved in advance.

Bus

The main bus carrier is Greyhound. The fleet is being updated gradually: there are already amenities and Wi-Fi in the northeast, and the cars are still quite shabby in the west. Tickets from Los Angeles to Las Vegas are priced from $ 15, from New York to Boston from $ 20.

Public transport within cities

Taxis, buses and shuttles are very popular in most US cities  in metropolitan areas they are complemented by subways. Tickets for all types of public transport are sold in vending machines, at the stops there are detailed route maps, so there should be no problems with the orientation on the area. Travel tickets are one-time and reusable, in New York one trip costs $ 2.75, in Washington – $ 1.75.

Rent of transport

Car

It’s better not to ride a rented car in New York, Washington, San Francisco: crazy traffic and lack of parking places will cause a lot of trouble. For trips around the country it is more profitable to take a car directly near the airport, where rent is a quarter cheaper. During the weekends and during the summer holidays (July-August), the car rental becomes more expensive.

To rent a car, you need to have a driver’s license and be over 21 years old (in some companies – 25 years). Payment is usually made by credit card, but if tourists book the car at the time of the tour, it can be paid in cash upon arrival at the rental office, leaving a refundable deposit of approximately $ 200 per week and showing an international air ticket. Together with the car tourists get a detailed map of roads.

Do not exceed speed or keep open bottles of alcohol in the car. A pedestrian entering a pedestrian crossing must be allowed to cross the road. Failure to follow one of the rules can cost the driver the driving license. When renting a car, it is best to fill the tank completely – for each missing gallon may be required the refund in triple the size. Distance in the United States is measured in miles, 1 mile equals 1.6 km.

The major rental companies are Hertz, Thrifty, Dollar, National and Alamo, and the number of rental offices in major cities is off the charts. Renting a small car in New York will cost from $ 70 a day, a convertible in Los Angeles – from $ 60, a SUV in Las Vegas – from $ 45. The price of gasoline is $ 0.70 per 1 liter, the average cost of parking is $ 1.50 per hour.

Taxi

Accustomed to the comfort Americans like to ride a taxi: they are called on the phone, looked in parking lots, but more often – caught right in the streets. A half-hour trip is unlikely to cost less than $ 30-35, but fares are different everywhere: in New York – $ 2.50 per landing plus $ 1.50 per km, in Los Angeles – $ 2.60 and $ 1.80, respectively .
