The Dominican Republic is a coconut palm tree bent over secluded beaches, the cleanest Caribbean Sea and excellent diving. The colonial capital of Santo Domingo, the sumptuous Punta Cana and Puerto Plata are all about the Dominican Republic.

Information about the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is a fertile land stretching east of Haiti surrounded by waves of the Caribbean. The capital is the hot Santo Domingo, the home of reference cigars, a cradle of incendiary merengue.

The first association with Dominican Republic is the endless beaches of amazing beauty: with white sand, spreading palm trees, tender sea – indispensable attributes of tropical paradise. But this is by no means the only thing that captures travelers. There are many worthy attractions here: architecture that incorporates island traditions and features of European styles, national parks with breathtaking nature. And yet – a whole palette of entertainment for adepts of outdoor activities. Dominican lives in the rhythms of bachata and salsa, inviting everyone to dive into the cheerful atmosphere of a world where every day is like a little holiday.

Hotels in Dominican Republic

All Dominican hotels are rated and have official star rating. As a rule, it corresponds to the list of services provided. Almost all hotels operate on an all-inclusive basis, which means three meals a day, snacks at any time, locally produced drinks, soft drinks in the minibar and beach “non-motorized” entertainment.

In the capital, rooms in modest 2* hotels will cost 2000 DOP, in more comfortable 3* – from 3700 DOP, in luxury 5* – from 5500 DOP per night. Accommodation in four-star Puerto Plata hotels costs from 3400 DOP, in five-star – from 7500 DOP per day. In Punta Cana you can rent a 4* for 4000-5000 DOP or 5* for 8000 DOP a day.

There are many comfortable cottages in the country, bungalows with 8-16 rooms each. The hotel complexes have large green areas (they usually run mini trains, since walking to the pool or beach is sometimes quite far), there is animation. All hotels are not high (maximum 4 floors), mainly 4* and 5*. The hotels have no Russian-speaking staff, but many tour operators have their permanent representatives.

Cuisine and restaurants of the Dominican Republic

The Dominican cuisine can be briefly described as an unusual but delicious mix of European, African and local recipes. It is based on the widespread use of legumes, bananas and vegetables (including exotic ones) in original combinations with meat and fish. Traditional dishes are considered, for example, the “bandera” – a stew of meat, fried bananas, beans, rice and salad, thick soup “asopao” and fried pork “puerko-en-puya”. But fish and seafood, despite the island status of the Dominican Republic, are not very popular.

The average check in a good cafe – 1500 DOP, in a prestigious restaurant – 1500-2000 DOP per person.

National drink – rum, it is produced here more than 15 varieties. The most popular are “Brugal”, “Barcelo” and “Bermudez”. The local brands of Kiskeyia, Seniza, “Presidente” and “Bohemia” have quite decent quality. The original taste has the traditional local alcoholic drink “pru” – the result of the fermentation of the juice of the eponymous plant.

There are an incredible number of restaurants and cafes in the Dominican Republic with a variety of menus and reasonable prices. Basically, Caribbean cuisine is served here, but fans of other gastronomic traditions, European, Asian or American, will find the place to their liking. For an introduction to authentic Dominican cooking, comedores are ideal: small family-run cafes with a homely atmosphere. A full meal here will cost from 170 DOP (in small towns) to 300 DOP (in the capital).

Travel across the Dominican Republic

Bus

The most popular travel in Dominican Republic is the bus. Metro bus and Caribe Tours run between major cities and tourist areas: new, comfortable, air-conditioned. The trip from Santo Domingo to Puerto Plata will cost 452 DOP, from Santiago to Sosua – 236 DOP.

Small private companies’ buses and guaguas vans are also widespread in the country. The guaguas vans move along clearly defined routes, stopping on demand. The average fare between cities is up to 100 DOP, within one settlement – 30 DOP.

Public transport in cities

Both among local and tourists are popular collective bus “carro-publicщі” and mototaxi “moto-koncho”. There are no meters, the price of the trip is fixed, there is no point in bargaining with drivers. It is cheap (100-250 DOP) to move on the moto-koncho, but it is quite extreme: up to 3-4 passengers can be seated on one motorcycle, there are no helmets, and your feet can be fired on the exhaust pipe.

Rent of transport

Car

In the cities and resorts of the Dominican republic it is convenient to move in a rented car, but only if the driver is ready to ride “with adventure”. The main benefit will be the manner of the local revelers: they follow the traffic rules if they are in a good mood, the horn is pressed more often than the brake, and the future turn may signal a wave of hands. Motorcyclists love to turn over the crosswalk, and a pedestrian is always right. In this case, police are often on the side of “theirs” and gladly write off fines to careless tourists. If this does not scare you, and if you are over 25, prepare a passport, international driving license (valid for at least another 90 days) and a credit card. Registration of insurance – obligatory (1100 DOP per day).

Taxi

Classic taxis are also available: parking lots are located near major hotels and attractions. You can find them by a special sign on the roof or a sticker on the windshield. The average cost of a trip to the city – from 350 DOP, transfer from the airport to the center of Santo Domingo – from 2000 DOP.
