The popularity of Peru as a tourist destination is due primarily to the wonders and mysteries – the mysterious heritage of ancient civilizations that once chose their ancestral land of prehistoric Peru. Even the most seasoned travelers are amazed at the perfectly fitted multi-toned monoliths in Machu Picchu temples, reverently inspect the ideal astronomical “devices” of Peru’s prehistoric observatories, and get lost in guessing the origin of geometrically correct multi-kilometer figures. Among other things, Peru also boasts the richest ecosystem: one-third of the Amazon delta is home to one of the world’s best known animal species.
Also Peru is the ancient city of Indians with mysterious structures, the “green hell” of pristine jungles, the deepest canyon in the world, the high mountain lake Titicaca, which was once part of the ocean.
Hotels in Peru
The overall level of the hotel base in Peru is quite high and meets world standards. Even three-star hotels feature spacious rooms and decent food.
The voltage is 220 V, 60 Hz, in some hotels the voltage is 110 V. The sockets are flat with two rods, but circular connectors are everywhere. In lodges located in the Amazon jungle, electricity is usually supplied by 10pm and later lit by kerosene lamps.
Cuisine and restaurants of Peru
European traditions have been heavily influenced the national cuisine of Peru, but it has remained very diverse and original. Culinary traditions are different in different parts of the country, but a large number of peppers, garlic, potatoes, yams (a kind of root crop), corn and vegetables are common.
Fish and seafood are popular on the coast and in the Amazon Valley. A popular local dish is fresh fish, well marinated in lemon juice with spices. As for potato dishes, they are popular everywhere in Peru – these are just plain boiled potatoes with sauce, and potato pancakes with pancake meat stuffing, and “cauza” – a mashed potato pie and hot chicken salad, or tuna. In addition, a variety of fruits is a hallmark of local cuisine – oranges, papaya, peaches and bananas, and exotics such as cherimoyi, lukuma or prickly pear, are familiar to us.
In the country it is worth trying “saltado” – stew of vegetables with different spices, rice in a pot, soups of lentils, beans and other legumes, “arros-con-choklo” – porridge of rice or cereals, “karapulkru” – dried potatoes with pork, chicken and sunflower seeds. As well as a very spicy beef soup with noodles, eggs, milk and vegetables, assorted meat of various kinds of (fried in sealed dishes on hot stones), alpaca steaks “puno” and the traditional local delicacy “kui” – stewed or fried whole guinea pig, a very tasty dish that is sure to try “ceviche” – marinated in a very special way fish or seafood.
From national drinks it is possible to select pisco – distilled grape alcohol from which Pisco Sour is made here. There are also many juices, herbal teas, and, of course, coffee in Peru. It is worth trying “chicha morada” – a refreshing drink made from corn with the addition of sugar and spices.
