Tanzania conquers the heart of a tourist with a mass of national parks with Darwinian animal diversity and the exoticness of African life. Lions of Serengeti and Mount Kilimanjaro, Ngorongoro Crater, Safari and Beach Vacation are all about Tanzania.

Information about Tanzania

Safari is the main attraction of touristic Tanzania. To shout out “look, look, an elephant eats” or “wow, what a cat” here, tourists from all over the world come to Tanzania. There are still few Ukrainian citizens among them, and there are absolutely no “budget” tourists: safaris are not cheap fun.

However, with all the merits of national parks, combined tours here are more popular than safari. And this is not surprising: the white sand beaches, rich underwater world and interesting excursions of Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia attract tourists tired of the mainland safari, no less than elephants and big cats.

Hotels in Tanzania

The hotel base of the country is very diverse. There are both “loggias” (of very good level, but also very expensive), and more than simple hotels for 2-3 rooms, as well as campsites. Most Zanzibar hotels offer half board accommodation (usually breakfast and dinner), and most safari lodges have full board.

Zanzibar Island is dominated by an “Arab” style of service (completely unhurried), but the level of service is gradually starting to pick up on the European one. There are no claims of customers’  to loggias, you can even say that this is probably the best place in terms of service.

The country has a standard voltage of 220-240 V. In the loggias and decent stationary tourist camps, the generators also supply a standard voltage of 220 V. The sockets are of the British standard”(adapter required).

Although there are a lot of hotels in the country, sometimes it is hard to find a room, so it is better to book a tour well in advance, especially on “peak” dates.

Kitchens and restaurants

Here it is, a heavy legacy of the colonial regime: Tanzanian restaurants usually serve no pickled elephant meat and no wart chops, and banal British dishes include soups, steaks, fried chickens, boiled vegetables and puddings. Asian restaurants cook better, but not so many. However, there are enough small African restaurants where you can try local cuisine without risking your health. The basis of their menu – dishes based on bananas (sweet, potato-like) and goat meat.

Local beer – cheap and tasty, still imported from Kenya or South Africa, but it is more expensive. It is better to take imported wine from Europe or South Africa, and with strong drinks you can try the local papaya vodka – “konyagi”.

Transfer to and travel across Tanzania

Getting to Tanzania

There are no direct flights to Ukraine from Ukraine. Air travel to Tanzania is only possible by transfer. One transplant will take about 13-20 hours.

It is most convenient to arrive in the largest city and the former capital of Tanzania – Dar es Salaam by such airlines: “Emirates”, “Qatar Airlines”, “KLM”, “Swiss”.

The transfer will take place in Amsterdam, Doha, Dubai and Zurich. Accordingly, there are many direct flights from European cities to the country.

Regular flights to Tanzania are provided by Dubai, Kenya, Qatar and Oman. There are several international airports in Tanzania: Julius Nierere, Kilimanjaro, Arusha. By the way, the capital airport in Dodoma is not international.

You can get to Tanzania by car or bus from neighboring countries, and there is also a ferry service to Uganda, Zambia and Burundi. The rail service operates with Zambia.

Travel across Tanzania

Train

The domestic airline network allows you to reach virtually anywhere in the country. In addition to the car, there are two railway branches for travel around the country: the first is the Dar es Salaam – Kigoma route with branches to Mwanza and Mpanda, the second is the Tazara (Tanzania – Zambia) railway. Delaying of trains for 12 hours is commonplace in this country.

Bus

By land, buses are most convenient, and some companies, such as Scandinavian, are more than comfortable: driving in a crowded, air-conditioned salon by locals traveling on donkeys, or in stuffed minibuses with tourists . But far from the big cities, transportation is easier, and in the depths of the trip on the “matatu” not to bypass, unless there is a car with a personal driver.

Ferry

There is a ferry connection between Dar es Salaam and the islands of Pemba and Zanzibar and the lakes of Victoria, Nyassa and Tanganyika. However, the ferry can be both a high-speed car-beast with all conveniences and a rusty trough – it is possible to guess in advance only by the ticket price. As a rule, night ferries are much worse than daytime ferries.

Car rent in Tanzania

It is better not to drive if you are an unprepared white man in Tanzania: bad roads, and local cars are in a bad condition, as well as the local driving style. Humans and animals cross the road, paying no attention to transport. Therefore, it is better to use the services of a professional driver, which will be especially important if you have to travel to the countryside or savanna. If, however, you still have to borrow a car in Tanzania, you will need international rights – even to operate a motorcycle. Movement in the country is the leftsided.
